The Work of the Holy Spirit with the Believer

The Holy Spirit is active in His work with the Christian believer. The work that we may be most familiar with is the work of the Holy Spirit regarding salvation. I personally believe that this may be the most important Holy Spirit activity of all. In these lessons it is important to remember the vast and varied workings of the Holy Spirit. He is the very active, third person of the trinity.

The Bible clearly points out that the believer is born again of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:5-6). This is not a physical birth but a spiritual birth of which we are speaking. And this Spiritual rebirth can have dramatic effects on the soul and the physical body. When we are born naturally then natural life is given. When we are born spiritually, then spiritual life is given. These are two separate events that have a dramatic impact on each other.

The believer’s understanding of the Spirit of God is given by the Holy Spirit. In simple terms without the working of the Holy Spirit a person cannot understand the Holy Spirit. This explains why it is hard to grasp the spiritual revelation of God through intellectual argument. You cannot impart revelation to an unbeliever through debate. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." In man’s natural intellectual understanding, the things of the Spirit will seem foolish. But with the wonderful help of the Holy Spirit renewing our mind, the things of God open up for the believer. Scripture plainly tells us that the unbeliever with his natural mind, cannot know the things of God nor can he be subject to the will of God, "because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be" (Romans 8:7).

The importance of being born again by the Spirit cannot be stressed enough. It leads to amazing things for the believer such as eternal life, adoption as a son, being a joint heir with Christ, and more. But a lack of salvation leaves the unbeliever with serious problems. As mentioned earlier, the unbeliever cannot know or understand God. He cannot be in God’s will. In worship, the unbeliever cannot call Jesus Lord: "and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost" (I Corinthians 12:3). He cannot please God (see Romans 8:8). He cannot bear fruit: "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me" (John 15:4). He cannot receive the Spirit of truth: "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you" (John 14:17).

The definition of a Christian is one in whom the Spirit dwells. I Corinthians 6:19 asks us, "What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" Paul is defining Christians as ones whose bodies are home to the Holy Spirit. But at the same time we can be certain that we are children of God by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears witness to this fact as revealed in Romans 8:16 (NASV): "The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit, that we are children of God." For additional confirmation of this point see also I John 5:10 and Galatians 4:6.

The Holy Spirit baptizes the believer into the body of Christ. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13). Through the operation of the Holy Spirit we are made to be members of the body of Christ. We are joined to God as His children and joined to each other as His body by the working of the Holy Spirit. This is not the same as the baptism of the Holy Spirit for power (as seen in Acts 1:8.) We will cover that baptism later in this course. The Holy Spirit performs many wonderful works (after all he is God!)

The Holy Spirit seals the believer. Ephesians 1:13b tells us, ". . . in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise." A seal is a guarantee that something is authentic. Seals should not be broken. If they are then the contents within can be suspect. Praise God, for when He seals us it is for a long time. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit as saved children of God until the day of redemption. (Christ’s return and the final judgment.) Ephesians 4:30 says, "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

What about after salvation? What is the Holy Spirit up to then? The Holy Spirit is active after salvation helping the Christian to maintain his life in the Spirit. The believer is sanctified by the Holy Spirit. II Thessalonians 2:13 says, "But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth." The believer overcomes the flesh through the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:5 reads, "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit." The Holy Spirit transforms the believer into the image of Christ as shown in II Corinthians 3:18: "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

The Holy Spirit strengthens the believer for greater revelation of Christ. Ephesians 3:16-17 tells us, "That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith." He established that our hearts were to walk with Christ and receive and give His love.

The Holy Spirit gives us the knowledge that Christ has received from God. He reveals and glorifies Christ to the believer. John 16:14 explains that, "He (Holy Spirit) shall glorify Me (Jesus): for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you." This is a key scripture for this course. Think about it; Jesus has received from God and by the working of the Holy Spirit He is giving to us what He has received. This may be one of the greatest promises in the Bible! To be able to have what Jesus has, how can it get any better?

He leads the sons of God as shown in Romans 8:14: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." If you are led by the Spirit then you are a son of God. This puts the importance of the work of the Spirit in a new and vital perspective. To be led by the Spirit is not an option. There is a strong implication here that if we are not led by the Spirit then we are not children of God. I think that Romans 8:14 begs this question: "Is the Holy Spirit the primary influence in your life?" As God’s own children, bought by the blood of Jesus, the Spirit must be our guiding influence. Our Father expects this from us.

The Holy Spirit is a comforter for the believer and brings the believer peace. In John 14:16 we read, "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever." There is an inner peace that only the Comforter can bring. In this world true peace is not obtained any other way.

The Holy Spirit brings forth fruit in the believer’s life. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith" (Galatians 5:22). I always like to point out through this verse that it is not our fruit but the Holy Spirit’s fruit. Many a well meaning teacher has taught that we should seek to have this fruit. We cannot have this fruit by our own efforts. Only by allowing the Holy Spirit to subdue our flesh can we have this fruit. The more we have of the Spirit, the more we have of His fruit. It is good to remember that evidence of the fruit lets us know when the Holy Spirit is in operation. Satan can imitate the gifts but he has a difficult time counterfeiting fruit. When was the last time the devil expressed godly love? True godly love is the basis for all of the fruit of the Spirit and all of the fruit are elements of love. When you grow through the Spirit the fruit becomes more and more evident.

The Work of the Holy Spirit in Relation to Jesus Christ

The scriptures speak clearly of a divine order in relation to our knowledge and revelation of the Lord. The Father is revealed by the Son and the Son is revealed by the Holy Spirit. John 16:14-15 says, "He (the Holy Spirit) shall glorify Me (Jesus): for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are Mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of Mine, and shall shew it unto you."

The Holy Spirit is continually bringing glory and honor to Christ. This is a key way to discern if a spirit is the Holy Spirit or a demonic spirit. One of the primary ways the Holy Spirit works is through glory and revelation of Jesus. John 15:26 says, "But when the Comforter is come . . . He shall testify of Me," and in John 16:14 Jesus tells us, "He shall glorify Me." The Holy Spirit brings revelation and understanding that we can never have through natural means. Jesus is the revelation of God and the Holy Spirit is the interpretation of that revelation. It is more than a simple translation. The Holy Spirit brings a deep level of understanding that becomes the foundation for a personal relationship with Christ. Without this revelation it is difficult to know Christ personally. The Holy Spirit creates a living union with Christ and the believer, making Christ very real in our lives.

In the person of Christ the Holy Spirit was and is active. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. "But when he (Joseph) had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit'" (Matthew 1:20 NASV). This is confirmed by two additional scriptures: Luke 1:35 and Matthew 1:18. This conception of Jesus brought a sinless purity that fulfilled scripture and was necessary for Him to do what He was sent into the world to accomplish. His ultimate sacrifice was perfect and able to redeem mankind because of who He was and the purity of the D.N.A. of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was not a new being called into life, but One who existed eternally who by His conception was about to enter into a vital relationship with mankind. It is important to realize that Jesus has been with us from the beginning of time. He has always existed. He is God.

Another work of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christ was when Jesus the child was brought into the temple the Holy Spirit was waiting to receive Him. A man named Simeon was filled with the Spirit waiting for the savior to be revealed. He prophesied over baby Jesus to the amazement of His parents. (Luke 2:25-30) Jesus' reception in the Temple was arranged by the Holy Spirit.. The Holy Spirit was waiting to receive Christ just as He is waiting for us today. Just like with Jesus, the Holy Spirit prepares the way and goes before us the believer for what is to come. God is full of surprises but the Holy Spirit keeps us ready to receive whatever wonders the Lord has planned.

Jesus' growth was attributed to the Holy Spirit: "And the Child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him" (Luke 2:40). By age 12 the rabbis were amazed as they listened to Him. This was because of the Holy Spirit and a fulfillment of prophecy as foretold in Isaiah 11:2: "And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord." The Spirit gave Jesus the knowledge that He needed for His ministry. It was not a man acquired knowledge (God does make use of manmade knowledge) but it was a supernatural knowledge straight from His heavenly Father God did not grow Himself, for Jesus is the "Alpha and the Omega." But Jesus’ humanity had to grow and develop just like any other man’s. He had to be God and He had to be man. This was the only way Jesus could successfully mediate for us.

He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness (see Matthew 4:1, Mark 1:12, 13). During the entire time of the wilderness experience the Holy Spirit was working with Jesus’ human nature to overcome severe temptations of the devil. He did not have victory because He was God incarnate, but because the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit allowed His humanity to overcome Satan. By the power of the Holy Spirit we too can overcome Satan and his temptations. Christians are not necessarily out of the will of God for suffering temptation. Jesus certainly was not out of God’s will when He was tempted. This is a lesson that all Christians need to learn. Jesus was and still is our model.

Concerning Christ’s earthly ministry, Jesus was God but He was also man and He ministered through the direction and power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus with power for His ministry, as shown in Matthew 3:16: "And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him." The Holy Spirit equipped Him for the purpose of His ministry. This anointing of the Holy Spirit was a key in Jesus accomplishing His destiny. It is the same key that is necessary for us. It was not until after the Spirit came upon Him that we hear of Him teaching and preaching. Matthew 4:17 says, "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, 'Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'" Jesus’ ministry time began with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He gave clear instructions to His disciples to also wait for the Holy Spirit before they were to begin their ministry (see Luke 24:49).

Jesus announced His mission statement after the Holy Spirit came upon Him. In Luke 4:18 Jesus tells us, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." I personally believe that this is a mission statement for all believers, because Jesus told us that we are to do the same works as Him and more (see John 14:12).

The Holy Spirit was working in Jesus’ healing ministry. Acts 10:38 shows us, "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him." The anointing of the Holy Spirit preceded Jesus' great ministry miracles.

The Holy Spirit was active in Christ’s deliverance ministry. Matthew 12:28 reads, "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." Deliverance from demons is equated to the kingdom of God. Demons are evicted by the authority of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The work of the Holy Spirit was the power required for Christ’s death and resurrection. He was enabled by the Holy Spirit to make the perfect sacrifice of His own body. "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:14). He was raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you" (Romans 8:11).

The Holy Spirit was at work concerning Christ's ministry to the church. Acts 1:2b shares that, "He through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen." Jesus' directions for the church came through the communication of the Holy Spirit. His directives are still spoken today through the work of the Spirit. Obedience to the Holy Spirit is what separates a Spirit-led church from a church led by man's directives. The distinction is as far as life is from death. Man can only manufacture dead things; the Holy Spirit brings life to the soul of man and life to the church.

The Holy Spirit is bestowed by Christ. Peter on the day of Pentecost explained the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and where He came from: "Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this which you see and hear" (Acts 2:33, RSV).

There is no other way to carry out the ministry of Christ except through the power of the Holy Spirit. John 14:12 says, "Verily. verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father." This scripture seems like an impossibility and it is without the supernatural working of the Holy Spirit.

Understanding the works of the Holy Spirit helps us to get to know the third person of the trinity. I hope that you, at this point, are developing a deeper appreciation for who the Holy Spirit actually is. But reader there is so much more. Let us continue in our study.

                      The Trinity from the Beginning

The Holy Spirit as a member of the trinity has been involved with the earth from the beginning. As a matter of fact the entire trinity was involved in creation. The Hebrew word for God "Elohim" is a uni-plural word indication more than one personality, which helps us to understand why God can be three persons. The Holy Spirit as the third person of the trinity, has been involved with world from the beginning. The Holy Spirit is active in every work that God is involved in. Some say He did not come into the world until the day of Pentecost. That is not true. The Spirit of God has been active since the beginning of time. Genesis 1:2 confirms this: "And the earth was without form, and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Some say that the Holy Spirit is the action arm of God; that God commands and the Spirit acts.

When speaking about the trinity, let’s start with Jesus. Actually, everything always starts with Jesus. Without Jesus nothing else matters including this school. Without Christ there is no access to God, no relationship, revelation, or power. Let’s look at some key scriptures that prove that our Savior was a part of creation:

                      - Hebrews 1:2 - (God) "Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds."

                      - John 1:3 – "All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made."

And of course we understand that God our Father was deeply involved in creation. The following scriptures prove this point:

                      - Genesis 1:1 – "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

                      - Genesis 1:7 – "And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so."

Now let’s take a scriptural look at the Holy Spirit in the work of creation:

                      - Psalms 104:30 – "Thou sendest forth Thy Spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth."

                      - Job 33:4 – "The Spirit of God hath made, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life."

The Holy Spirit was involved in the creation of the earth, the animals, and mankind. For your understanding look up these scriptural proofs:

                      - The Holy Spirit was involved in the creation of the earth (see Genesis 1:2, Job 26:13; Psalms. 33:6).

                      - The Holy Spirit was involved in the creation of animals (Psalms 104:11-12, 14, 17-18, 20-21, 25-26).

                      - The Holy Spirit was involved in the creation of human life (Job.33:4).

The Holy Spirit works with humanity as a whole. One of the main manifestations of the Spirit is that He tells us and witnesses to us about God’s plan for salvation. It is important to always remember that the Holy Spirit is constantly pointing to and glorifying Christ as our savior. You could say that He is our own personal witness of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him" (Acts 5:30-32).

The Holy Spirit convicts mankind of sin, righteousness and judgment. "And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (John 16:8). Every one has a sense of right and wrong and our conscience warns us of things, but a godly conviction of right and wrong is a different matter. No man can produce godly conviction; it is a work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus says in John 16:9 that the Holy Spirit will convict the world "of sin, because they believe not on Me." In this scripture we see that it is not the sin of behavior, but the sin of unbelief that He is convicting us of. Unbelief in Jesus is a very serious sin because it brings all of the condemnation of one’s every sin upon the one who fails to be saved by faith in Christ. Saint Augustine, a founding church father, said, "Unbelief while remaining allows all sins to be retained and when it departs all sins are remitted".

The Holy Spirit convicts mankind of the righteousness of Christ. This is not a self-made righteousness or right standing but a godly righteousness that only Jesus can impart. Jesus tells us the Holy Spirit will convict the world "of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and ye see Me no more" (John 10:16). In Christ is found the lost righteousness that the world needs. This righteousness is imputed by faith. II Corinthians 5:21 reveals, "For He (God) hath made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him". This is such an amazing fact that many do not get this. Jesus is offering us a free gift of right standing with God. As a matter of fact the only way to get this righteousness is to accept it freely. It seems too good to be true and our fleshly nature often fights this truth. Everything that we are taught to believe points to the necessity of earning our way or proving ourselves. The world system says that we have to work for all that we get. This is not God’s way! The Holy Spirit will convict our hearts of God’s way.

There is a logical explanation for God’s demand for righteousness and His provision for it. What God demands from us is something that we can never achieve on our own. We need to understand that God is perfect. Because of His perfect nature God cannot tolerate or relate to sin. All of us have some sin. To have a relationship and be in right standing with God we must also be perfect. That is why we need a savior. God has a plan for our salvation and it is imparted to us by the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit revealing and teaching us we will never fully understand His plan for salvation which gives us right standing with God. The plan that the Holy Spirit is disclosing to us includes righteousness which is imparted to us by Christ. He is actually giving us His standing with God. All of this comes by faith in the finished work of Christ. This is why the Gospel is called "Good News!" The Holy Spirit gives us the revelation of this "Good News."

The Holy Spirit convicts of judgment. Jesus tells us in speaking of the Holy Spirit that He will convict the world "of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged" (John 16:11). The world stands guilty for refusing to believe in Christ. If the prince of the world (Satan) is judged then all who follow him are also judged. It is a sad note that many do not believe in Christ. Therefore they are under serious judgment. This should put urgency in our hearts for evangelism. Sometimes a conviction of the punishment coming is all that is needed to quickly bring a soul to salvation.
