Generational Curses

Dysfunction even though it has many fleshly properties can be part of a generational curse.

Even the scheme can be a generational curse.

Generational curse is a demonic assignment that is passed down through generations.

They can be broken once it is recognized; repented of, forgiven and all legal doors have been closed.

According to Scripture the effects of sin tend to run in families, and indeed are a curse.

Exodus 34:6-7 (NIV) - And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."

This is a serious warning but it is important to point out that this Scripture was referring to the Old Covenant. Satan loves to try to invalidate the New Covenant by condemning Christians with the Old Covenant.

A Prophecy concerning the New Covenant –

Jeremiah 31:29-32 (NIV) - In those days people will no longer say, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' Instead, everyone will die for his own sin; whoever eats sour grapes--his own teeth will be set on edge. "The time is coming," declares the Lord, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers.

A curse is an illegal trespass by Satan in a vain attempt to undo the work of Christ.

A generational curse is basically a defilement that was passed down from one generation to another. For example, if your mother has been heavily involved in the occult, then she has become quite defiled (polluted or unclean), and has opened herself up to various demons to enter her. Satan works hard to cause the sin of the parents with its consequences to be handed down to their children:

Lamentations 5:7 - "Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities."

What happens is that not only is the uncleanliness handed down, but demons move in and take advantage of this often at a very young age in a person's life (often before birth). The person then goes throughout life struggling with the same bondages that their parents struggle with. The good news is that the Blood of Jesus is more powerful than any bondage that may have been handed down to you! You can be set free and completely released from the effects of any generational curses handed down to you!

Galatians 3:13 - 14 -

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"-- in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Many people believe that we are delivered from all curses when we are saved. The answer legally is yes. When you think about salvation it is a complete benefit package. The word salvation comes from the Greek word sozo which means – to deliver, protect, make whole, heal, and preserve.

According to Scripture we have been redeemed from the curse of the law and given the blessings of Abraham. We have been healed, we have been given the abundance, and we have been given power and authority and many other blessings that took place because of the divine exchange at the cross. All things that Jesus won for us by offering Himself as a sacrifice rightfully belong to all Christians. It is all past tense.

However even though the rights and privileges of believers are many and wonderful most Christians never experience them because of a lack of knowledge and faith.

Generational curses legally do not belong to Christians. Satan constantly works illegally. He is a liar and a trespasser and will do anything to violate the rights of Christians. Breaking generational curses is literally fighting for what is rightfully yours through Christ.

Are Christians free from generational curses? Yes, if they fight the good fight of faith. Christ has gained freedom for us but it's up to us to walk in it and fight for it.

A summary of the exchanges at the cross - Jesus was punished that we might be forgiven. – Isaiah 53:4

  1. Jesus was punished that we might be forgiven. – Isaiah 53:4
  2. Jesus was wounded that we might be healed. - Isaiah 53:4
  3. Jesus was made sin with our sinfulness that we might become righteous with His righteousness. - 2 Corinthians 5:21
  4. Jesus died our death that we might share His life. - Romans 6:23
  5. Jesus became poor that we might become rich with His riches - 2 Corinthians 8:9
  6. Jesus bore our shame that we might share in His glory. - Psalm 69:20
  7. Jesus endured our rejection that we might have his acceptance as children of God. - John 1:12
  8. Jesus became a curse that we might receive a blessing.- Galatians 3:13
  9. Our old nature was crucified with Jesus so that we may become new creations.

In conclusion

When the family does not function according to God's plan then it is dysfunctional.

A family doesn't function according to God's plan for various reasons. The primary over all cause is a lack of obedience to the Lord by not being saved filled with the Holy Spirit and living a mature Christian life.

Satan comes in like a roaring lion and with all his tools tries to take advantage of every form of disobedience. When a family member is deceived and therefore dysfunctional, they do not know that they are deceived, because they are deceived.

We have discussed the effects of being raised in a dysfunctional family and they are many. God is a restorer, He is a redeemer and He is a healer. This is not only what He does but who He is.

Exodus 15:26b - for I, the LORD, am your healer.

Psalms 103:2-3 - Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;

It is up to us to apply by faith the restoration and redemption that is been provided. The truth of the word of God is the truth that will set you free. The principles are clear. Practicing God's principles is not a religious activity but it is the power to gain freedom over all the damage and demonic influence in your life.

It is important that you have victory over everything that causes you pain and thereby hinders your life. Your call and purpose are for the benefit of those around you. If you continue to suffer then many others will also have consequences.

Psalms 71:23 - My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; And my soul, which You have redeemed.

Seven Steps to Release

  • Confess your faith in Christ and His sacrifice on your behalf.
  • Repent of all of your rebellion and sins. Take person responsibility.
  • Claim forgiveness of all sins.
  • Forgive all people who have ever wronged you or harmed you.
  • Renounce all contact with anything of the occult or anything satanic.
  • Pray the prayer for release from any curse.
  • Now believe that you have received and go on in God’s blessing!

Study Questions:

  1. Define the term, “generational curse.”
  2. How is sin and its effects handled differently from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant?
  3. How did Christ redeem us from curses?
  4. How has this course benefited you? If you have been affected by dysfunction how to you plan to get free and stay free?
