Pray Like a Pro

What is prayer?

  • Prayer can be a request
    • Mat 21:22 “And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."
    • Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
  • Prayer can be conversation with God
    • Delight in the details
    • Psa 37:23 The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
  • Gratitude
    • 1Th 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Who’s called to pray?

Eph 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

What if you don't know what to pray for?

Prime your prayers with “standards” while listening for specifics.
  • Invitation
  • Gratuity
  • Faith
  • Anointing
  • Wisdom
  • Discernment

What if I don’t know any verses?

Heb 8:10 - I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS.

What do you do if you get stuck in the middle of a prayer and don’t know what to say?
  • Don’t be Afraid of Silent Moments – Pause & Listen
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to Lead
  • Let Go and Let the Holy Spirit Lead

Why do some people want to hold hands when they pray?

Gal 2:9 James, Peter, and John, who seemed to be the leaders, recognized that God had given me this special task; so they shook hands with Barnabas and me, as a sign that we were all partners. We agreed that Barnabas and I would work among the Gentiles and they among the Jews.

What if someone beats me and prays my prayer first?
  • Pray anyway as the Holy Spirit leads you.
  • Two are in agreement
  • Two parts of one prayer

The Power of Prayer
  • Daniel sets kingdoms in motion through prayer
  • In Acts, the Church prays and God sends an angel to rescue Peter from prison. Later same angle exacts the Lord’s revenge on the king.

Different Kinds of Prayer
  • Prayer Closet — Private Prayer
  • Group Prayer — Church, Home Group, etc.
  • Meditational Prayer — Studying God’s word and seeking the author’s voice
  • Ministerial Prayer — Praying over another
  • Intercessory Prayer — Praying over another or on another’s behalf
  • Corporate Prayer — Prayer over the Church, Body of Christ, and government

Prayer Language

Tongues — 3 Kinds:
  • Private Prayer Language
  • Corporate Message (needs an interpreter)
  • Manifestation of the Holy Spirit

The Corruption of Prayer

Praying to false gods:
  • That society is long gone.
  • Today we have different idols.

Praying for the Lusts of the Heart:
  • Jas 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Contemplative Prayer – Doctrine of Demons:
  • Php 4:8 In conclusion, my friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable.
  • 2Co 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Vibration Prayer:
  • Pantheism - a doctrine that identifies God with the universe, or regards the universe as a manifestation of God.
  • Pantheism prays to the creation instead of the creator.
  • Mat 6:7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do…”

Praying Like the Heathens — Many Words
  • Mat 6:7 “…for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.

Beginning & Ending Prayer
  • “Our Father who art in Heaven”
    • Heavenly Father
    • “Heavenly Father, we come to you in the name of your son Jesus.” - Every time we come before the Father, we do so through the cross.
  • In Jesus’ name — Why do we say this? Is it always appropriate?
    • Joh 14:13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son."
  • Amen
    • Church of England — Declaration of Agreement

Fear of Praying in Public
  • I don’t know Bible verses or references.
    • It’s what’s in your heart that matters.
  • I might say something that’s wrong.
  • Someone else might pray the same thing.
    • Mat 18:19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
  • My praying isn’t good like others.
    • God values what is in your heart — not how you sound to men.
    • Mat 19:14 But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
  • I don’t want to interrupt someone else.
    • Your prayer may hold another’s healing – Don’t hold back.
  • What if I sound silly?
    • A worry of pride

Suggestions
  1. Be sensitive to how the Holy Spirit flows through you.
  2. Don’t try to copy the way other people pray — Be who God created you to be.
  3. Pray for things that glorify God and are in His will.
  4. Pray for things that serve the Kingdom of God.
  5. In my experience, the most frequently answered prayer are prayers offered on another’s behalf. In other words, pray for others more than yourself.
  6. Pray in agreement with God’s word.
  7. Don’t pray for things God has already given you or commanded you to do.
  8. Practice when to pray, when to petition, and when to proclaim.
  9. Short prayers are okay! If all you have to pray is “Holy Spirit be with us and teach us,” then pray that and don’t feel like you need to add more.

What to pray for when you don’t know what to pray for:
  • God’s will in the life of you and others
  • Discernment to Understand God’s Will & Word
  • Faith — To Do the Things Set Before You
  • Wisdom — to Apply God’s Word
  • Anointing — to Serve Others
  • Boldness — to Share God’s Word and Step Out in Faith
  • Opportunities — to Serve God’s Kingdom
