1. Redemption
   
   
   1. Definition "a releasing or liberation from captivity, slavery or death by the payment of a price, called a ransom"
   
   
   
   1. Two primary meanings "payment of a price and deliverance of a captive"
   
   
   
   1. The death of Christ is the price that was paid for the deliverance of the sinner.
      1. -- King James - Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
      2. -- Revised Standard - Matthew 20:28 even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
   
   
   
   1. The deliverance that Jesus obtained is called "redemption".
      1. Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
      2. Two critically important words in the above scripture are "once" and "eternal"
   
   
   
   1. Redeemed from what?
      1. The penalty or curse of the law - Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
      2. From the Law itself - Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; and Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
         1. Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
         2. We are to act according to the righteous guidelines set down by God.
         3. I am not under the law but I have learned from the law many things including what sin is.
         4. To ignore the many lessons of the law is acting as an immature believer - Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
      3. From the power of sin - Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. And Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (see also Ti. 2:14; 1 Pt. 1:18,19; Rom. 6:12-14)
      4. From Satan - Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
      5. From the evil world - Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
      6. Our body - Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
   
   
   
   1. The final redemption - Luke 21:27-28 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
   
   
   
   1. Summary of the benefits of Christ’s death
      1. It was vicarious - our substitution
      2. It was an atonement - our covering
      3. It was a propitiation - our appeasement
      4. It was a reconciliation - our new relationship
      5. It was a redemption - our ransom

1. For Whom Did Christ Die?
   
   
   1. For the church- Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (read v. 26 and 27) also John 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so I know the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
   
   
   
   1. For the entire world - Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. And John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
      1. Why are not all saved if He died for everyone?
      2. Because belief is a free will choice.
         1. John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
         2. John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
         3. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
