- Justification
- Sanctification
- Glorification
Past Tense: Justification
– Just as if you had never sinned.
Romans 5:1 - Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Present Tense: Sanctification
– Just as if you had never sinned.
John 17:16-19 - ...Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. Just as You sent Me into the world, I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. Future Tense: Glorification
– The new man, the glorified body
Philippians 3:20-21 - But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. (ESV) Sanctification — The Bloomin’ Onion
Like The Bloomin’ Onion, sanctification peels away the layers.
But, what are these layers?
If Justification wipes the slate clean, where do these layers come from?
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons but God's powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments; we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey Christ. (GNB)
Each layer represents a false belief, a life-pattern, or learned behavior.
Some of these behaviors can grow, like a seed, into a formed weapon to steal away your abundant life.
In a moment, we’re going to cover a list of behaviors. It’s not important to remember them all—just the one that belongs to you. Devices
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and [a]have it abundantly.
2 Corinthians 2:11 - Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices, also called schemes.
What are “devices”?
Devices, also known as footholds, strongholds, or schemes are customized weapons formed to be effective against you.
Why are they formed and effective against you?
Because they are built upon your personal experiences. Pain and trauma are often the “device” seed, that once planted, can grow into life-long weapons of bondage.
When ministering or counseling life issues, often the origin or “seed” of an issue has grown out of moments of pain or trauma.
This is why counselors will often ask questions probing past experiences. Formed Weapons
A behavior, especially one that is changed, can become a foothold or stronghold in your life that can grow into bondage.
Eph 4:27 – Do not give the devil a foothold or opportunity
Footholds and/or opportunities are access to your life where weapons can be “formed” against you.
Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper... Seeds of Formed Weapons
The natural response to pain is to make it stop. The natural response to trauma is to prevent it from happening again.
If you touch a hot stove you'll get burned, and your response will be, “I’ll never do that again.”
This example shows how your behavior is modified to prevent any future pain. This natural response to avoiding pain and/or trauma is a key moment of behavior change that often becomes the seed of a “formed” weapon.
Coping Mechanisms
Escape: distractions, work, reading, TV, withdrawal, busyness, intoxication Avoidance:
Avoid a person or situation linked to the traumatic event. Withdrawal and Social Isolation:
Retreat to safety. Dismissal:
“It was no big deal.” — Covers trauma with a lie.] Substitution / Deflection:
Replace the traumatic event with a different concern to cover it over. Self Depreciation — Idle words & word curses
- “I deserved that.”
- “Maybe someone else could have avoided that, but it always happens to me.”
- “That’s the best I’ll ever see.”
Risky Behaviors:
Nothing could hurt as much as what I’ve already been through.
“May fortune favor the foolish.” — A demonic blessing.
Procrastination:
Loss of motivation
Depression (i.e. spirit of heaviness)
Excuse:
Justify the traumatic event with a lie.
“Those things just run in the family.”
“No surprise, that the way it always goes.”
4 Seasons of Formed Weapons
Season 01 — Generational

Deu 5:9 You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Num 14:18 The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.
