It is No Longer I Who Live

Jesus’ death and resurrection were vicarious.

"Vicarious" comes from the word "vicar" which means "a substitute" — one who takes the place of another and acts in his stead"

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

As believers we can live vicariously through the death and the resurrection of Jesus.

Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me."

Luke 23:33-34 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.

Without the conviction of the Holy Spirit the world does not understand they are committing terrible sins against God.

Luke 23:42-43 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."

It is never too late for simple act of faith.

Luke 23:44-45 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two

In a powerful prophetic move because of the sacrifice of His son God tore the veil that separated His people from His presence. It was a legal move.

John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

The mission of Christ on earth was perfectly completed.

Matthew 28:6 - "He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”

The resurrection was vital. Christ rose from the consequences of sin (death) that we might also rise from the consequences of sin.

Romans 6:5 - For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,

We were united with Jesus in His death and united with Him in His resurrection.

Christ’s death and resurrection was:

  • Vicarious - Our Substitution
  • Atonement - Our Covering
  • Propitiation - Our Appeasement
  • Reconciliation - Our New Relationship
  • Redemption - Our Ransom
